Progressive asthenia and anorexia in a 37-year-old male
We report a case of a 37-year-old male admitted to the hospital because of increasing weakness and loss of appetite since 6 weeks.
At physical examination, the patient is pale. There is a slight splenomegaly.
Laboratory examination reveals a pancytopenia, a marke increase of LDH, and a hyperbilirubinemia of the indirect type.
A further diagnostic procedure leads to the diagnosis of pernicious anemia. As usual in the "case of the month" series, the differential diagnosis, pathogenesis, treatment and prognosis of this disease are briefly exposed.
