Modernity's confident prediction of the eventual disappearance of religion as a social institution under the assault of technical rationality as well as Christian missionaries' rosy prognostication in the nineteenth century about the imminent triumph of Christianity over non-Christian religions by virtue of its radiant truth proved in hindsight to be little more than wishful thinking. |
