Journal: Louvain Studies Volume: 27 Issue: 1 Date: spring 2002 Pages: 3-28 DOI: 10.2143/LS.27.1.925 Abstract : Professor Magister Emeritus Louis Janssens died on 19 December 2001 at the age of 93. During the last years of his life, Prof. Janssens experienced the gradual weakening of his heart, but this condition was generally dealt with through medication and did not affect his mental state or alertness. Nor did it prevent him from celebrating daily liturgy with a group of sisters close to his home, just outside of Leuven. In the late summer of 2001, the condition began to become more severe and less manageable, necessitating periodic hospitalization. Nevertheless, until the last couple of days of his life, when he became physically more weak, Prof. Janssens remained alert, even lively, and eager to discuss not only everyday matters but even theological ideas. He died peacefully, in the early hours of the morning, in the company of his grand niece and her husband, Lieve and Hugo, with whom he shared his home and who lovingly looked after him since his heart began to show signs of weakness. Their five-year old daughter, Katrijn, was a great source of joy for Prof. Janssens. |
