Document Details : Title: The Distinctive Contribution of Ignacio Ellacuría to a Praxis of Liberation Subtitle: «Shouldering the Burden of Reality» Author(s): DE SCHRIJVER, Georges Journal: Louvain Studies Volume: 25 Issue: 4 Date: winter 2000 Pages: 312-335 DOI: 10.2143/LS.25.4.898 Abstract : On November 16, 1989, Ignacio Ellacuría, along with five fellow Jesuits and two house staff members (Elba and Celina Ramos), was murdered by a Salvadoran commando team. As the Rector of Universidad Centroamericana (UCA), he had committed himself to the cause of the poor by making political analyses of the Salvadoran reality, by publishing them and by broadcasting them through the media. This political passion cost him his life, the price he had to pay for his basic conviction that one must 'shoulder the burden of reality' (hacerse cargo de la realidad) whatever the hardships may be. He learned this realism from the Basque philosopher who resided in Madrid, Xavier Zubiri, and with whom he worked for a long time. In this article, I shall (I) review the basic features of Zubiri’s thought, and (II) show its influence on Ellacuría’s thought-provoking article on the method of liberation theology, and on his work Philosophy of Historical Reality. |
