Document Details : Title: The Forgotten Historian Subtitle: Laurence Echard and the First History of the Roman Republic Author(s): RIDLEY, R.T. Journal: Ancient Society Volume: 27 Date: 1996 Pages: 277-315 DOI: 10.2143/AS.27.0.632406 Abstract : It is precisely three centuries since the appearance of the first history of the Roman Republic. The same historian was also the author of the first history of England from ancient times to his own, in the early eighteenth century. Yet there would be few historians of Rome or England who could name their predecessor who holds this double first, and it is extra-ordinarily difficult to find his name mentioned or his work assessed in standard reference works on biography or historiography. Even some two centuries ago, Laurence Echard was described as «a person of some estimation among his contemporaries, but who is little known to us». |
