Document Details : Title: Source-language Oriented Remarks on the Lexicography of the Greek Versions of the Bible Author(s): JOOSTEN, Jan Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 81 Issue: 1 Date: April 2005 Pages: 152-164 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.81.1.616506 Abstract : The lexicographer of the Septuagint and its revisions is obliged to explore several lines of investigation if he or she wishes to be successful. Alongside Hellenistic Greek usage as attested in contemporary literature and in the papyri, and in addition to close study of the context within the version itself, attention should also be paid to the Hebrew equivalent of the Greek word at issue. Indeed, the Hebrew source may give one an idea of what the translator was thinking when he selected a given Greek word. What is relevant, in this perspective, is not the meaning of the Hebrew words as defined in a modern dictionary, but the meaning known to the translator, which may be rather different. In the present article, the “Hebrew dimension” of the Lexicography of Greek Bible Versions is illustrated by some renderings of the Hebrew verb הִתְעַבֵּר, “to become furious, to be arrogant”, particularly with respect to Ps 78(77),21 and 89(88),39. |
