Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 118 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2005 Pages: 87-108 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.118.1.616486 Abstract : By the literary analysis of the Chronicles of Bar Hebraeus’ last chapter, the author attempts to determine the audience of these two texts written in Syriac and Arabic. In his Syriac Chronicle, Bar Hebraeus who was a witness of the events, puts the accent on the didactic and edifying style. This puts the genre of the text between historiography and hagiography, although in the Arabic version, he follows an Islamic historiographical model. The last chapter of the Maktebonout zabnê seems like a history of the Christian Community, while in the Muḥtaṣar it seems rather addressed to a Muslim readership. |
