Document Details : Title: Studies on the sḏm.t=f Verb Form in Classical Egyptian Author(s): ZONHOVEN, L.M.J. Journal: Orientalia Lovaniensia Periodica Volume: 28 Date: 1997 Pages: 5-32 DOI: 10.2143/OLP.28.0.583547 Abstract : The construction studied here, r sḏm.t=f, is the sister construction of ?r s?m.t+f, which is analyzed in the first study on the sḏm.t=f verb form. There it is argued that the literal translation of ḏr sḏm.t=f is “at a time point that he is to hear yet” and that the verb form is a relative future tense, the specific meaning of which is to locate its Event in a future relative to a Reference point/situation in the context. Whereas ḏr sḏm.t=f is of rare occurrence, we are on much firmer ground with the r sḏm.t=fconstruction, which has a long history continuing into Coptic. Since I consider it most improbable that any scholar would disagree with the statement that both constructions contain the same verb form, I feel justified in proceeding in the present study from the results already obtained and from my definition of the sḏm.t=f as a relative future tense. |
