Although the number of Jews in the region increased over the course of the eighteenth century, from 3,650 individuals to 19,620, the majority remained poor, with the exception of several families of notables from which community officials were recruited. This indigence partially explains the simplicity, not to say the poverty, of the ceremonial objects, both domestic and private, which have survived from eighteenth-century Jewish communities in Alsace. |
