G. Palgrave wrote that ‘wine had, in fact, been not only tolerated by the Founder of Christianity, but even, if one may so say, patronized, and raised to a dignity of the highest religious import’. By raising the question of wine-production by monasteries, these proceedings now not only highlight the diversity of attitudes towards the dignified juice, but enters into an underrated economic issue of the late antique world: the monastery as an economic centre and a producer of wine. |
