Document Details : Title: The Prohibition and the Use of Alcohol in the Syrian Ascetic Traditian and Its Biblical and Spiritual Origins Author(s): ABOUZAYD, Shafiq Journal: ARAM Periodical Volume: 17 Date: 2005 Pages: 135-156 DOI: 10.2143/ARAM.17.0.583326 Abstract : This paper on the prohibition of alcohol does not aim to study the whole Syrian ascetic tradition, but confines itself to the early ascetic tradition, namely the fourth and the fifth centuries. The prohibition of alcohol in the Syrian ascetic tradition did not represent the general behaviour of the early Syrian Christian Society, which used alcohol in its daily diet without any restriction. Nevertheless, Syrian ascetic circles were quite influential in Late Antiquity, and they have left their imprints on their Christian society. |
