Document Details : Title: The Shape of Sherds Subtitle: Function and Style at Godin II Author(s): GOPNIK, Hilary Journal: Iranica Antiqua Volume: 40 Date: 2005 Pages: 249-269 DOI: 10.2143/IA.40.0.583212 Abstract : The site of Godin Tepe provides one of the few sources of evidence for the elusive Median state. Unfortunately, although the site was markedly rich in architectural detail, the small finds from Godin were virtually nonexistent, and the only good evidence we have for the occupational history of the site are the 3000-odd very fragmentary ceramic sherds that the occupants left behind in refuse piles. In the absence of reconstructable diagnostic vessels or distinctive small finds these sherds must serve as the main source for the relative date and cultural history of the Iron Age occupation of Godin. In this paper I attempt to mine this unprepossessing data set to recover as much information as possible about the cultural patterns that led to their deposition in the garbage dumps of Godin II. |
