Document Details : Title: Domitius Corbulo and the Senatorial Opposition to the Reign of Nero Author(s): VERVAET, Frederik Juliaan Journal: Ancient Society Volume: 32 Date: 2002 Pages: 135-193 DOI: 10.2143/AS.32.0.58 Abstract : Although his father had opposed to the emperors more than once, Domitio Corbulo minor had a blitz career in the military and came in control over all the Roman oriental province armies with potestas consularis. Dio in particular stresses that Nero had an absolute confodence in his general and that Corbulo always demonstrated total loyalty towards his slightly eccentric princeps. However, a series of dramatic events, succeeding each other at ever shorter intervals, would directly contribute to the ruin of the venerable general. The purpose in this paper, though, is not to examine the nature and evolution of senatorial opposition to teh reign of Nero. Rather it is confined to a review of those episodes from Nero's conflict with various factions and individuals in the senate that contributed to the final rupture of trust between the emperor and his general. |
