Journal: Onoma Volume: 36 Date: 2001 Pages: 255-287 DOI: 10.2143/ONO.36.0.563287 Abstract : Based on a comprehensive list of all the cases testified in the department of what is known today as Moselle in France, this paper is an attempt to describe the genesis and structure of toponyms, which are mentioned in two languages and “translated” from one into the other. Its purpose is to prove that the villages under consideration are in all cases foundations of the Early Middle Ages and therefore cannot be included in the complicated issue of the traditio nominumfrom Late Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages. The analysis of the first element of the toponyms allows for important conclusions to be drawn on the usage of the names of persons in the Merovingian and Carolingian times. |
