Journal: Onoma Volume: 36 Date: 2001 Pages: 215-227 DOI: 10.2143/ONO.36.0.563284 Abstract : In the last decades scholars have been trying to reconstruct the language and culture of the Lombards, a Germanic people whose traces are found almost exclusively in Italy, where they came to establish a powerful kingdom (VI-VIII cent.). As early as 1935, Ernst Gamillscheg had called the attention of Germanists and Medieval Historians to Italian toponyms of Lombardic origin, whose relevance for a partial retrieval of the Lombards' language and culture was difficult to overrate. He did not, however, suspect that not only Northern and Central Italy, but also Southern Italy could yield a good crop of pertinent data. Italian place names of certain or probable Lombardic origin can be classified according to specific semantic referents, as arms, settlements, social organization, waters, landscape, and the cult of some Saints. |
