Document Details : Title: The Rhetorical Exercises (progymnasmata) in the Old Armenian 'Book of Chreia' (Girk῾ Pitoyic῾) Subtitle: Translation or original composition? (on the occasion of P. Cowe's Review) Author(s): MURADYAN, Gohar Journal: Revue des Études Arméniennes Volume: 27 Date: 1998-2000 Pages: 399-416 DOI: 10.2143/REA.27.0.563270 Abstract : In a recent critical edition of the old Armenian handbook of rhetorik (Girk῾ Pitoyic῾ – Book of Chreia), the author made an attempt to demonstrate that 1) the definitions of various types of rhetorical exercises are literal translations of the correspondingf passages of Aphthonius, with some omissions and textual divergences due to the transmission history of the Greek text, and 2) the exercises are original compositions, some imitating the Progymnasmata of Aphthonius. P. Cowe argued against the latter conclusion, namely the non-translated character of the exercises and the existence of the original non-abridged recension of Aphthonius as a source of imitation for the Armenian Progymnasmata. The author assembles all arguments in favour of her own conclusion. |
