Document Details : Title: Impact of Employment, Fiscal and Welfare Policies on the Structure and Extent of Poverty in the UK Author(s): COX, Gabrielle Journal: Ethical Perspectives Volume: 3 Issue: 1 Date: April 1996 Pages: 15-28 DOI: 10.2143/EP.3.1.563044 Abstract : Within the United Kingdom discussions of poverty are beset by problems about terminology. There is no one accepted definition of poverty, and indeed, the British government refuses to put forward any definition. Furthermore, The government argues that Britain does not have a poverty problem, and tha tfigures which purport to show the opposite are, as Prime Minister John Major asserted in a radio interview, 'bogus statistics' Nonetheless, there are at least three measures which provide convenient yardsticks by which to measure poverty, all of which indicate that poverty has been growing at an alarming rate. |
