In its popular form, it is a daily practice and found amongst all the people of Tibetan culture to this day with a varying degree of interpretation concerning its ritual significance. Its liturgical version is performed only by special practitioners. However, both forms of this purification ritual have the same objective: to purify defilement resulting from improper actions that men commit and which affect their well-being as well as the purity of their ancestral deities. This purification ritual is further connected in its mythical component, with the origin myths of the first celestial king, the mythical founder of the Tibetan nation. |
