Document Details : Title: History and Eschatological Mysticism in Ignatius of Antioch Author(s): BRENT, A. Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 65 Issue: 4 Date: December 1989 Pages: 309-329 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.65.4.556423 Abstract : What are we to make of the fact that although the letters of Ignatius of Antioch are critical for our understanding of the evolution, if not in fact the invention of the threefold Order, unlike his contemporary, Clement, he has no account of a historical succession and mentions no rite of ordination by means of which such a succession is transmitted? As a result, recent studies have emphasized the a-historical character of Ignatius' view of the apostles and church order, which simply legitimate the gathered church in this world as the incarnation of an almost Platonic, transcendental and heavenly church Order. |
