Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 64 Issue: 1 Date: April 1988 Pages: 164-172 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.64.1.556379 Abstract : In the discourse on the bread of life (Jn 6,22-59), the fourth evangelist has Jesus react to the unbelief of his audience (6,41-42) with the words: 'No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day' (6,44). In fact Jesus repeats in somewhat different words what was previously said in 6,36-40. This time, however, he explains his words by means of a quotation of 'the prophets': καὶ ἔσονται πάντες διδακτοὶ θεοῦ, 'and they shall all be thaught by God' (6,45a). In the following sentence he applies the quotation to the statement that God's drawing is the condition for coming to Jesus: 'Everyone who has heard from the Father and learned comes to me' (6,45b). A comparison of 6,44 and 6,45b reveals that 'to be drawn by the Father' is explained as 'to hear and learn from the Father'. The OT quotation introduces the theme of God's teaching. |
