Luther introduced this rending of קהלת, remains a highly debated book. In the exegetical literature, diametrically opposed opinions can be found on nearly all questions of literary criticisms and interpretation. This sage has been called an atheist, a pessimist, a sceptic, an epicurean, but also a profoundly believing man, an optimist, a godfearing person who adheres to authentic Judaic morals. These sharp contrasts are connected with divergent opinions on the literary composition and particularly on the question whether this book is the work of one, two or more authors. We also find these contrasts with respect to koheleth's views on death and afterlife. |
