Document Details : Title: The Flight of the Christians to Pella Author(s): VERHEYDEN, J. Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 66 Issue: 4 Date: December 1990 Pages: 368-384 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.66.4.556036 Abstract : The flight of the Christians to Pella before or during the Jewish War against Rome (66-70 A.D.) has been a constant topic in nearly every survey of first-century Church history. It is also a wide-spread assumption that this flight is alluded to in the New Testament and in apocryphal writings. The first explicit mention, however, belongs to the Patristic era. Problems arise concerning the historicity of these witnesses and the origin and significance of the tradition. For many scholars, the flight to Pella remains a puzzling element in our understanding of the history of the Early Church. |
