Document Details : Title: The Assembly as Liturgical Symbol Author(s): LAURANCE, John D. Journal: Louvain Studies Volume: 22 Issue: 2 Date: summer 1997 Pages: 127-152 DOI: 10.2143/LS.22.2.542285 Abstract : The renewed emphasis on the role of the assembly in the liturgy is perhaps the most important development in church life in the twentieth century. Such associated practices as altars facing the people, liturgy in the vernacular, and various lay ministries have fairly revolutionized the church's self-understanding, replacing a top down ecclesiology with one of a more collegial, inter-personal nature. At the same time, Vatican II's stress on the need for active participation by everyone at the liturgy has not been received without occasional misunderstandings and exaggerations. |
