Document Details : Title: Henry of Ghent and the Louvain Edition of His 'Opera Omnia' V Author(s): MARRONE, S.P. Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 68 Issue: 1 Date: April 1992 Pages: 207-211 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.68.1.542174 Abstract : Sometime in the spring or summer of 1288 Henry of Ghent published an extensive treatise on the controversial privilege to hear confessions extended to the mendicant orders by Pope Martin IV in his bull, Ad fructus uberes, of late 1281. Although the treatise is clothed in the garb of scholastic disputation ¬posing a question to be debated, examining arguments pro and con and carefully laying out the master's considered opinion - the order of presentation diverges significantly from medieval procedures of debate. Immediately after the question comes the exposition of Henry's own views, developed extensively in general and particular terms, and only then are we given the arguments pro and con, put before us by means of a lengthy survey of responses and counterresponses to twenty-six arguments in favor of Henry's position and responses to sixteen arguments against his view. |
