Document Details : Title: The Story of David and Goliath Subtitle: The Early History of Its Text Author(s): VAN DER KOOIJ, A. Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 68 Issue: 1 Date: April 1992 Pages: 118-131 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.68.1.542165 Abstract : In the textcritical research of the Hebrew Bible the issue of the text of I Sam 17 is one of the most interesting cases. The text of the story of David and Goliath (1 Sam 17) is attested in two versions: a longer one (MT: 58 verses) and a shorter one (LXX: 32 verses). As to the second version the larger minuses are 17,12-31.41.48b.50.55-581. The problem to be solved is that of the relation¬ship between the two versions. The most obvious possibilities, central to the discussion since A. Kuenen and J. Well hausen, are: (1) the version attested by LXX is the result of a shortening of the longer one, be it by the translator, be it on the level of the Hebrew Vorlage; (2) the longer version of MT is the result of expansion, whereas LXX reflects an earlier stage of the redaction history of the text. With other words, which version, the longer one of the MT, or the shorter one, attested by the Old Greek (LXX), is the more original? Thus the early history of the text of I Sam 17 is a matter of length. |
