Document Details : Title: The Fate of the Gentiles in Joel and Acts 2 Subtitle: An Intertextual Study Author(s): VAN DE SANDT, H. Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 66 Issue: 1 Date: April 1990 Pages: 56-77 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.66.1.542149 Abstract : The book of Joel is quoted in Acts 2,17-21. This quotation underlies the speech of Peter in Acts 2,22-40. Peter there elaborates on Joel 3,1-5a while preeaching to those 'dwelling in Jerusalem'. He explains that not God but the exalted Lord has poured out the Spirit. The Name that has to be called upon is identifies as that of Jesus Christ, whom God has made both Lord and Christ. The quotation from Joel is given here for another purpose as well. By means of the words 'this is' it interprets the events that have been described before in Acts 2,1-11. Joel 3,1-5a throws light on the gift of the Spirit and its consequences. A biblical prophecy is fulfilled there and then, within the community Peter is preaching to. |
