Few ethical problems are more pervasive: falsehood marks every sphere of human interaction, and functions as a tool (or a weapon) for both the powerful and the powerless. Mendacity is the instrument of doctor and patient, researcher and subject, teacher and student, employer and employee – even parent and child. As such, it straddles the artificial boundaries between personal and social ethics. |
