Document Details : Title: 'Siloam' in John 5,2? Subtitle: Ephraem's Commentary on the Diatessaron Author(s): BAARDA, Tjitze Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 76 Issue: 1 Date: April 2000 Pages: 136-148 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.76.1.539 Abstract : Zahn was puzzled by Ephraem’s comment, which begins with a quotation of Jn 5,7 and mentions the long illness of the patient recorded in Jn 5,5, but then unexpectedly speaks of the water of “Siloam”. This reminded him of the blind man’s healing recorded in chapter 9 (cf. 9,7), but he concluded that Ephraem’s remark had nothing to do either with the healing of John 5, or with the episode in John 9. Zahn rejected that latter possibility, because a healing by an angel was not recorded in that story. Still he fails to offer an alternative solution: the occurrence of the name “Siloam” in the Ephraemic passage remained unexplained. |
