Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 108 Issue: 3-4 Date: 1995 Pages: 243-263 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.108.3.525829 Abstract : For more than four years now literary and non-literary texts have been emerging from well-defined archaeological context at a site known as Ismant el-Kharab, whose ancient Greek name was Kellis, in the Dakhleh Oasis of the Egyptian Sahara. Excavations conducted under the auspices of the Dakhleh Oasis Project and directed by Dr C.A. Hope have produced a wealth of textual material. In this article I provide the editio princeps of one of the most interesting of the Greek literary texts so far to emerge, a text beautifully preserved and complete, which displays clear affinities with Manichaeism. This text raises numerous questions, most especially concerning the spread of Manichaeism in Greek throughout the Roman Empire. |
