The story of the meeting in the biography of the Prophet by Ibn Hishām includes a gloss which suggests that the Anṣār and the Prophet already envisaged at that stage, even before the Hijra, a break between the Anṣār and the Jews of Medina. In this article it is argued that the original version did not in fact contain any reference to a break with the Jews. While both parties may well have considered such a break to be an inevitable outcome of their alliance, one would not have expected to find this mentioned, or even alluded to, in the story of the 'Aqaba meeting. |
