Document Details : Title: The Known Syriac Witnesses to John Chrysostom's Catecheses, and New Manuscript Sources Author(s): SHIPPEE, Arthur B. Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 109 Issue: 1-2 Date: 1996 Pages: 87-111 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.109.1.525820 Abstract : The early translations of Patristic writings into Syriac and other eastern Christian languages provide very important and often unique witnesses to their texts and their histories of transmission. While these fine sources are being more fully exploited, much remains to be discovered, studied, and published, and standard editions do not yet routinely make use of available oriental versions. The case of the Syriac witnesses to John Chrysostom's catechetical homilies shows how material is ready at hand for study. While a translation of one homily in one manuscript is commonly reported, a pair of them in fact are preserved, and in two manuscripts. |
