Document Details : Title: Adnominal and Adverbal Attributes in Semitic Languages Author(s): GAI, Amikam Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 109 Issue: 3-4 Date: 1996 Pages: 369-393 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.109.3.525814 Abstract : The basis upon which the proposed thesis stands and from which it grows, is the theory saying, that there are three and only three syntactic relationships among the different sentence components – the predicative, attributive (adnominal) and 'objective' (adverbal). The aim of the article is to contend that the latter two relationships, i.e., the attributive and the 'objective' are in actuality two realisations of the same relationship, viz. that the relationship of the object or the adverb to the verb is the same as that of the adnominal attribute to its qualified substantive, and therefore only two relationships exist – the predicative and the attributive. This thesis is illustrated by means of examples, and several phenomena in the Semitic languages are explained in the light of it. |
