Document Details : Title: Orthography in Ancient Hebrew Inscriptions Author(s): ANDERSEN, Francis I. Journal: Ancient Near Eastern Studies Volume: 36 Date: 1999 Pages: 5-35 DOI: 10.2143/ANES.36.0.525778 Abstract : The recovery of the phonetic shapes of Hebrew words attested in inscriptions from the biblical period is often confounded by uncritical retrojection of Masoretic orthoepy onto ancient spellings. Sound empirical method works with the expectation that ancient Hebrew spelling was phonetic, at least in intention. On the basis, the development of various word classes can be traced with more precision. |
