Document Details : Title: Jerusalem and its Parallels Subtitle: Five Cities Paired with Jerusalem in the Bible Author(s): FRISCH, Amos Journal: Ancient Near Eastern Studies Volume: 32 Date: 1994 Pages: 80-95 DOI: 10.2143/ANES.32.0.525743 Abstract : Jerusalem is unique among the cities mentioned in the Bible, but is not always represented by itself. The author discusses five cities paired with Jerusalem in the Bible: Sodom, which is highlighted in the Bibical description of Abraham's period; Shiloh, the religious centre in the days of Joshua and the Judges; Gibeon, which became important after the destruction of Shiloh (and Nob), and which was apparently associated with Saul; Hebron, which assumed great political importance in David's time; and finally Samaria, the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel since the days of Omri. |
