Document Details : Title: The Proto-Alphabetic Inscriptions of Sinai Author(s): COLLES, Brian E. Journal: Ancient Near Eastern Studies Volume: 28 Date: 1990 Pages: 1-52 DOI: 10.2143/ANES.28.0.525711 Abstract : In a previous article a new scheme was formulated for deciphering proto-alphabetic inscriptions from Sinai to Canaan, the so-called Proto-Sanaitic and Proto-Canaanite texts. This approach reduces the table of alphabetic pictographs from the 27 proposed by Albright to 23 characters. The proto-alphabet may have had more than 23 signs in its original form, but the extant inscriptions seem to exhibit only this number of pictographs. |
