Document Details : Title: The Mixed Erkat'agir Bolorgir Script in Armenian Manuscripts Author(s): STONE, M.E. Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 111 Issue: 3-4 Date: 1998 Pages: 293-317 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.111.3.519499 Abstract : Recently there have been a number of changes in the nature of the information at our disposal and it is now possible to re-assess the character of the so-called 'transitional erkat‘agir-bolorgir' script. The data upon which the present analysis is based has been assembled in the database being prepared for the Album of Armenian Paleography project and the Census of Armenian Manuscripts project14. This database aspires to create a reliable list of Armenian manuscripts. At the time of writing, it contained records for 2873 manuscripts, the majority of which bear dates and many of which also exactly located. There exist a substantial number of additional dated manuscripts, but most of them are later. The data currently available includes a good part of the early dated manuscripts. Of this corpus of 2873 manuscripts, 240 are undated or bear approximate dates. The rest bear exact dates, usually established on the basis of the colophons in the manuscripts. In other words, there are 2633 clearly dated manuscripts in this corpus. Photographs have been made of a page or pages of 425 manuscripts, carefully selected from the larger corpus, and of these, 377 are exactly dated. From among these, we selected manuscripts for analysis in this article which combine erkat‘agir and bolorgir letters in their writing. |
