Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 113 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2000 Pages: 205-235 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.113.1.519475 Abstract : Rashīd ad-Dīn was one of the most eminent Muslim historians. He was born in 445 AH / 1247 AD in Hamadān where he, like his father, worked as physician. After his conversion from Judaism to Islam he ascended to the most powerful position at the court of the Mongol dynasty of Īlkhāns and served three Mongol emperors as grand vizier. When his patron, the emperor Öljäytü, died (December 16th, 1316), his adversaries' influence multiplied so that ten months later, in October 1317, he was denied the office of grand vizier, and under the false accusation of having killed Öljäytü by poison, was condemned to death. On July 18th, 1318, together with his son Ibrahim, he was executed by order of the 12 years old Abū Sa‘īd, Öljäytü's son, who ascended the throne as the ninth Mongol ruler. The hatred of his adversaries was so ardent that even a hundred years later the mortal remains of his body were exhumed and thrown in the Jewish cemetery. |
