Document Details : Title: Did the Jews Enjoy a Privileged Position in the Roman World? Author(s): PUCCI BEN ZEEV, Miriam Journal: Revue des Études Juives Volume: 154 Issue: 1-2 Date: janvier-juin 1995 Pages: 23-42 DOI: 10.2143/REJ.154.1.519427 Abstract : Are we allowed to consider the position of the Jews a privileged one in the Roman world? In order to answer this question, the testimony which emerges from the Roman and Greek documents quoted by Josephus should be examined against the background of the epigraphical and papyrological material concerning the rights of other peoples living under the Roman government. Such a comparison suggests that not all the rights enjoyed by the Jews may be automatically considered privileges. The matter surely deserves further investigation. Here, three cases are examined in particular: the right to send money to the Temple of Jerusalem, the right of assembly, and the position of the Jews vis-à-vis the imperial cult. |
