Document Details : Title: Two Glass Medallions Subtitle: Sasanian Influence in Early Islamic Aqaba Author(s): WHITCOMB, Donald Journal: Iranica Antiqua Volume: 30 Date: 1995 Pages: 191-206 DOI: 10.2143/IA.30.0.519291 Abstract : Modern excavations attempt to examine broad cultural processes through patterns of artifact change and distribution. Such an approach to Islamic archaeology has come slowly, mainly from the 1970’s. As useful as these results have been (insofar as they have been published), it remains somewhat surprising how interpretations may be strongly influenced by the chance coin or rare artifact. The following paper will present two minor artifacts, attempt to show their stylistic derivation from Sasanian art, and discuss the implications which may be drawn for the early development of Islamic culture. |
