Document Details : Title: Central Asians in Sixth-Century China Subtitle: A Zoroastrian Funerary Rite Author(s): LERNER, Judith Journal: Iranica Antiqua Volume: 30 Date: 1995 Pages: 179-190 DOI: 10.2143/IA.30.0.519290 Abstract : This offering to Klaus Schippmann celebrates his valuable contribution to our knowledge of Iranian fire sanctuaries by presenting the depiction of a fire ceremony, performed outdoors, in a place distant from Iran, and representing the broad reach of Greater Iranian culture and religion. While several depictions of fire ceremonies are known from pre-Islamic Central Asia, as well as one from China, all to be cited later, the richly detailed portrayal of this ceremony, which I believe is part of the Zoroastrian funerary ritual, is singular. |
