It mainly consists of donations, made during the second half of the 19th and the first decades of the 20th century by the local industrials Hector Van Hooff (1850-1923) and Gustaaf Maes (18511904). Their passion for the past resulted in the creation of private collections, worthy emanations of the 18th and 19th century tradition of the curiosity cabinets. While Van Hooff was preoccupied with Belgian antiquities, as witnessed by his preference for Bronze Age metalwork (Verlaeckt 1993), Gustaaf Maes brought together a diversified collection centered on the Mediterranean. The latter encompasses Egyptian artefacts, Roman terracotta oil lamps and a heterogeneous ensemble of classical glass vessels, which will be further discussed in detail. |
