Document Details : Title: Personal Names in North Norway Author(s): ALHAUG, Gulbrand Journal: Onoma Volume: 37 Date: 2002 Pages: 301-322 DOI: 10.2143/ONO.37.0.519199 Abstract : This study uncovers a series of idiosyncratic aspects in the pattern of naming in North Norway. Section 2 shows the higher frequency of surnames of the -sen type in Noth Norway compared in South Norway. The remaining study concentrates on a comparison of first names in North Norway and South Norway; specifically Inner East Norway (the counties of Hedmark and Opplurad). The article outlines a method (the marker name method) which is suited for demonstrating characteristic features in the name patterns in one region compared with another. It shows that North Norway has many more marker names than the counties of Hedmark and Oppland. This is seen in connection with the fact that North Norway has a creative name formation system (suffixation and the clipping all compounding system) which results in the creation of new names. The great abundance of names in North Norway can to a certain extent be explained by the fact that this region with its long coast-has been more open to foreign influences than the inland counties of Hedmark and Opplund. |
