Document Details : Title: In Search of the Persian Tiger Author(s): AZARPAY, Guitty Journal: Iranica Antiqua Volume: 34 Date: 1999 Pages: 325-332 DOI: 10.2143/IA.34.0.519118 Abstract : In a recent paper there has been argued for the attribution to the Oxus region of tiger imagery on certain Sasanian silver vessels. This paper generated considerable discussion about the regional attribution of other Sasanian artifacts with tiger imagery. In this context an alternate origin for some tiger imagery in Sasanian times was proposed, by reference to observations on the habitat, particulars and last sightings of the Persian or Caspian tiger. While there is ample evidence for the presence of tigers in the Oxus region in Sasanian times, the author seeks to explore the evidence for the existence of the Persian tiger that may have inspired tiger imagery on some artifacts of the Sasanian period. |
