Document Details : Title: Alexander's March from Susa to Persepolis Author(s): MACDERMOT, B.C. , SCHIPPMANN, Klaus Journal: Iranica Antiqua Volume: 34 Date: 1999 Pages: 283-308 DOI: 10.2143/IA.34.0.519116 Abstract : Since, on the one hand, the Behbehan-Fahlian route offers the easiest approach to Fars and, on the other, Arrian's account of the Uxian affair implies that Alexander followed a route which carried much traffic and was used by the great kings themselves, there can be little doubt that the Behbehan-Fahlian route was the way Alexander went from Susa to Persepolis. Nearly 190 years have passed since the suggestion was first made, and various writers have since attempted to locate individual incidents of the march, or the whole march itself. It is the aim of the article to piece together a consistent account which would not only reconcile the apparent inconsistencies in the narratives of the historians but also correlate the geographical factors given by Quintus Curtius and partially confirmed by Diodoros, the so-called 'Vulgate sources' and Arrian. |
