Document Details : Title: Interpretations of Christian-Muslim Violence in the Mollucas Author(s): STEENBRINK, Karel Journal: Studies in Interreligious Dialogue Volume: 11 Issue: 1 Date: 2001 Pages: 64-91 DOI: 10.2143/SID.11.1.519042 Abstract : On 19 january 1999 violent riots started in Ambon , the capital of the Indonesian province of the Moluccas. At least until the end of October 2000 (when this contribution was closed) there were four periods of increasing violence in the Ambon area. During this period related fighting and burning happened in most other parts of the province and in other parts of Indonesia. This article gives a chronology of teh major events and an analysis of economic, political and social aspects of the turmoil. It pays especially attention to the question why Ambon for centuries could be considered as a good example of peaceful Christian-Muslim relations but has recently become a 'killing field'. |
