Document Details : Title: Jesus Christ as Source of Assertiveness and Plurality Author(s): LOGISTER, Wiel Journal: Studies in Interreligious Dialogue Volume: 11 Issue: 1 Date: 2001 Pages: 25-36 DOI: 10.2143/SID.11.1.519040 Abstract : The Christian churches in Europe are pleading more and more for a legal arrangement and payment for the Islamic teaching of religion to Muslim children. Many people are surprised at this. This is, after all, rather at right angles to the attitude that western Christianity has taken over the centuries to Islam. Not everyone is grateful for this new point of view taken by (the leaders of the) churches. Where I live there have been protests for several years against a plan to build a new mosque in a certain place. The opponents point out the historical-cultural value of the place and also bring environmental concerns to bear, but in the background the centuries old anti-Islamic mentality is playing a not unimportant role. The leaven of the old apologetics and missionary proclamations and catechesis has not worn off enough. The new attitude with respect to Islam goes together with a general metamorphosis within the churches with regards to non-Christian religions. In this contribution I will attempt to integrate the new theologia religionum into some fundamental ideas and metaphors of belief. I will approach this by exploring how Jesus dealt with non-Jews. |
