Document Details : Title: Buddhism and Modernity in Japan Subtitle: A Historical Overview Author(s): ANBEEK, Christa W. Journal: Studies in Interreligious Dialogue Volume: 11 Issue: 2 Date: 2001 Pages: 199-212 DOI: 10.2143/SID.11.2.519024 Abstract : In the last four decades a growing interest in Zen Buddhism can be seen in Europe. Many people, individually or in groups, are engaged in Zen. Some of them practise Zen meditation and sit for hours in silence without moving. Others are inspired by philosophical and religious ideas that come from Zen and again others are occupied by Japanese art forms like flower arranging, the tea ceremony, archery and sword fighting. A 1997 French handbook mentioned 130 official Zen centers in Europe where Zen courses and programs are offered. Many bookshops sell a great many books on the meditative, philosophical and artistic aspects of Zen. |
