Document Details : Title: H.-G. Gadamer and E. Levinas Subtitle: Two Philosophical Approaches to the Context of Dialogue Author(s): TOSOLINI, Tiziano Journal: Studies in Interreligious Dialogue Volume: 12 Issue: 1 Date: 2002 Pages: 37-62 DOI: 10.2143/SID.12.1.519014 Abstract : The purpose of this essay is that of illustrating (allbeit in a succinct manner) these two philosophical paths of reasoning and inquiry. The guiding idea is that of discovering how these two thinkerscould help all those who are engaged in a dialogical situation to have a respectful and meaningful encounter with the other and with what the other says. It is not the purpose of this article to attempt a comparison between the tought of Gadamer and Levinas, nor is it my aim to what extent such an intriguing and thought provoking comparison would be plausible. My goal, instead, is to explore the concept of dialogue from the perspective of hermeneutics and 'quasi-phenomenology' as developed respectively by Gadamer and Levinas and underline their basic concerns. |
