Document Details : Title: The Clothing of the 'Shami Prince' Author(s): VOGELSANG-EASTWOOD, Gillian Journal: Persica Volume: 16 Date: 2000 Pages: 31-47 DOI: 10.2143/PERS.16.0.510 Abstract : In the National Museum of Archaeology, Tehran, there is a large and impressive statue in bronze, known as the “Shami Prince” or sometimes, the “Shami Nobleman”. The statue is slightly larger than life size and is very accurate in the appearance of the man’s facial features and garments. In fact, the details of the man’s clothing are quite remarkable and deserve careful study. There are various books and articles which discuss the general appearance of the “prince” and his clothing. More specifically, Vesta Sarkhosh Curtis has written extensively about the “prince’s” garments and given parallels. However, certain aspects of the man’s clothing were not described and it is hoped that in this article it will be possible to show exactly what the man was wearing and, for certain garments, how they were probably constructed. |
