This article explains these hermeneutics with the aid of the Preface to Beyond the Verse: Talmudic Reading and Lectures. In this Preface Levinas grounds the basic structure of a Bible verse in the prophetic nature of language; he shows how this prophetic nature orients the speaker to the other who addresses me and awakens my responsibility; this irreplaceable responsibility brings out my uniqueness. |
