Document Details : Title: The Hermeneutics of Emmanuel Levinas Author(s): WAAIJMAN, Kees Journal: Studies in Spirituality Volume: 11 Date: 2001 Pages: 71-125 DOI: 10.2143/SIS.11.0.505277 Abstract : The hermeneutics of Levinas, located in the phenomenological-dialogical tradition and aiming at the transcendental-pragmatic dimension of the text, is realized in his Talmudic readings. This article explains these hermeneutics with the aid of the Preface to Beyond the Verse: Talmudic Reading and Lectures. In this Preface Levinas grounds the basic structure of a Bible verse in the prophetic nature of language; he shows how this prophetic nature orients the speaker to the other who addresses me and awakens my responsibility; this irreplaceable responsibility brings out my uniqueness. |
